Sherman P. Lloyd

Sherman Parkinson Lloyd (born January 11, 1914 in St. Anthony , Idaho , † December 15, 1979 in Salt Lake City , Utah ) was an American politician . Between 1963 and 1965 and between 1967 and 1973 he represented the second constituency of the state of Utah in the US House of Representatives .

Early Years and Rise in Utah

Sherman Lloyd attended public schools in St. Anthony and Rexburg . He then studied until 1935 at Utah State University in Logan . This was followed by a law degree at George Washington University , which he graduated in 1939. After his admission to the bar that same year, he began practicing in Salt Lake City.

Between 1940 and 1962, Lloyd was an advisor to the Utah Retail Grocery Association , a retail association in Utah. Politically, he became a member of the Republican Party . From 1954 to 1962 he was a member of the Utah Senate . He was President of the House in 1959 and meanwhile leader of the Republican Senators. At that time, Lloyd was also a member of the government council of Utah and represented his state in a joint committee in which the heads of the individual government councils of all US states were represented ( Board of Managers of Council of State Governments ). Between 1961 and 1962 he was also a member of a tax commission. From 1960 to 1966, Lloyd was a delegate at all Republican congresses in Utah. During the same period he was a director of the Beehive State Bank . In 1960 he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention , where Richard Nixon was nominated as a presidential candidate.

Congressman

In 1960, Sherman Lloyd ran for the first time for the US House of Representatives. In the election he was defeated by David S. King of the Democratic Party . Two years later he was elected as King's successor in Congress , where he served a legislative period between January 3, 1963 and January 3, 1965. In 1964 he did not run for re-election. Instead, he ran unsuccessfully within his party for nomination for the US Senate . His seat in parliament has since returned to David King.

In the following two years Lloyd was back in Utah, where he was vice president of a financial institution ( Prudential Federal Savings ). He also lectured at the University of Utah . In the 1966 congressional elections, he was re-elected to the US House of Representatives. After several re-elections, he was able to exercise his mandate between January 3, 1967 and January 3, 1973. In 1972 he ran again for re-election, but was defeated by Democrat Wayne Owens .

Another résumé

After returning from Washington, DC , he lectured again between 1973 and 1974. He then headed the Utah Department of Commerce. In 1976, Sherman Lloyd ran unsuccessfully for the US Senate. Then he became a newspaper publisher. He died in Salt Lake City in December 1979.
