The Salzweg housing estate is a development in Zurich that Manuel Pauli planned and built between 1965 and 1969 . The development consists of two point houses and two staggered, two to six-story row buildings. The settlement was built by the City of Zurich as part of the 1965 housing campaign, which aimed to create cheaper housing.

location

The Salzweg settlement is located on the outskirts of the city of Zurich in Altstetten, in the immediate vicinity of the city forest and the Eichbühl cemetery .

history

In 1965, the city of Zurich launched a competition to promote affordable, family-friendly municipal housing. Manuel Pauli won the competition with a design of four groups of courtyards, each with a point and a line structure. In the end, however, only two of them were carried out. In order to ensure rapid construction progress, the settlement was prefabricated on the construction site from prefabricated floor-to-ceiling panels.

According to Manuel Pauli, the residential courtyards, staggered in height, with playgrounds and hills, should serve as identification points for the residents. The color scheme by Eva Pauli underlines the gradation of the buildings in different shades of red. The colored concrete glaze comprises five shades of red.

In mid-June 2020, the city of Zurich announced a competition for a replacement building for the Salzweg housing estate. Due to the prefabricated construction, among other things, the city of Zurich describes the settlement as difficult to renovate.
