Silvio O. Conte
Silvio Ottavio Conte (born November 9, 1921 in Pittsfield , Massachusetts , † February 8, 1991 in Bethesda , Maryland ) was an American politician . Between 1959 and 1991 he represented the state of Massachusetts in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Silvio Conte attended Pittsfield Vocational High School until 1940 . From 1942 to 1944 he served in the US Navy during World War II . After a subsequent law degree at Boston College and his admission to the bar in 1949, he began to work in this profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . Between 1951 and 1958 he was a member of the Massachusetts Senate . In 1960, 1964 and 1968 he was a delegate to the respective Republican National Conventions .
In the 1958 congressional election , Conte was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the first constituency of Massachusetts , where he succeeded John W. Heselton on January 3, 1959 . After 16 re-elections, he could remain in Congress until his death on February 8, 1991 . During this period, the Vietnam War , the civil rights movement and, in 1974, the Watergate affair took place .
