Simeon D. Fess

Simeon Davison Fess (* 11. December 1861 in Harrod , Ohio ; † 23. December 1936 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician of the Republican from Ohio.

Life

Simeon Fess was born to Henry and Barbara Fess on a farm in Allen County . In 1889 he graduated from Ohio Northern University in Ada . A year later he married Eva C. Thomas. After graduating, he taught history and law at the university and was also employed in administration from 1889 to 1896. In 1894 he graduated in law and was dean of the faculty from 1896 to 1900 . From 1900 he worked for two years in the office of vice president of the university. From 1902 to 1907 he completed postgraduate studies at the University of Chicago . He then returned to Ohio and became president of Antioch College in Yellow Springs . He held this office from 1907 to 1917. He was also active as an editor and author and was also a Methodist and Freemason and belonged to the Knights of Pythias .

During his tenure at Antioch College , he took part in 1912 as a delegate to a constituent assembly of the state of Ohio and was elected to the US House of Representatives in the same year , where he had a seat from 1913 to 1923. During this time he was chairman of the Committee on Education and Labor and from 1918 to 1922 chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee . In 1922 he did not stand for re-election, but ran successfully for a seat in the US Senate . He held this seat from 1923 to 1935. Among other things, he was chairman of the Committee on the Library and from 1929 to 1933 as Whip of the Republicans. 1930 to 1932 Fess chaired the Republican National Committee . In 1934 he ran unsuccessfully for a third term in the Senate.
