Znamensky Cathedral

The Znamensky Cathedral (the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Sign , Russian Знаменский собор в Тюмени, also abbreviated Собор Знамения) is an in Tyumen location Russian Orthodox Cathedral of the Metropolitan of Tobolsk and Tyumen. It is located in the historic city center on Semakov Street. The Znamensky Cathedral is an excellent monument of the Siberian Baroque from the 18th century.

In the 17th and 18th centuries there were two Znamenskaya wooden churches that fell victim to the flames in 1697 and 1766 respectively. Construction of the third stone church building began on September 1, 1768. After 33 years, on September 9, 1801, the church was consecrated. In the years 1820, 1839, 1851 to 1862, and 1901 restorations took place; after the fire in 1901 the bell tower was built. In 1913 the Znamenskaya Church received the status of a cathedral. The plan to build a larger cathedral was not implemented. The Znamensky Cathedral remained the largest church in Tyumen with 2,000 seats. After the October Revolution, on December 16, 1929, the cathedral was closed for services. It was then returned to the Russian Orthodox Church - first in 1933 (until 1941), and a second time on October 9, 1945.

In 2002 the cathedral was fitted with twelve new bells. In the course of the 2003 restoration, the domes and crosses were replaced.
