Software Package Data Exchange

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Software Package Data Exchange (SPDX) describes a standard format dealing with free software or open source - software designed to facilitate, especially in companies and municipalities. It is intended to simplify the problem of licenses, copyrights and the cooperation between software components. With this standard it is possible, among other things, to check the compatibility of the licenses in software packages. The declared aim of the SPDX forum is to help companies obtain and use free and open software.

The format is being developed by the SPDX-Workgroup, a working group of the Linux Foundation . The origins go back to an initiative in 2010, version 1.0 was released in August 2011. Version 2.1 of SPDX was released in October 2016. With this, so-called snippets were optionally introduced, with which parts of a file with different properties can be indexed. Source files can also be marked using a syntax and the integration of additional files has been made easier. The terms "Software Package Data Exchange" and "SPDX" are registered trade names of the Linux Foundation.
