The South African Press Association ( Sapa ) was a South African news agency founded in 1938 with headquarters in Johannesburg and further offices in Bloemfontein , Durban and Cape Town . It had 40 employees and supplies radio stations, press products and websites with texts and photos.

Sapa was supported by the four major media groups Caxton , Independent Newspapers , Johnnic Communications and Media24 . Despite this backdrop, the news agency had been in financial trouble for some time - the workforce was reduced from 82 in 2000 to 50 in 2006. In 2015 the news agency was closed.
