spec.

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The abbreviation spec. (rarely also sp. ) from the Latin word species (German: species, kind ) is used in biological parlance to add generic names to the end when one wants to express that although it is a specific species, the exact species epithet is not known or meaningless. For example, Mentha spec. for an unspecified species from the mint genus.

In contrast to the scientific generic name usually shown in italics , spec. mostly in normal typesetting. The abbreviation is not with ssp. to be confused.

In the first description of new species in the publication of the species name is followed by "nova species" (or "new species") specified. This is regularly abbreviated, occasionally as “nov. spec. ", but more often the abbreviation" n.sp. "
