Spider cloth

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The spinning cloth is a hand-spinning and rope making -used moistened piece of woolen cloth or leather.

The ropemaker or reep beater spins the thread by letting it slide through the cloth to make it supple and smooth. Especially with hard materials (hemp) for spinning or twisting, the spinning cloth serves as hand protection. The flap can be guided with the left or right hand, this depends on the handedness and the task at hand. During the rope work it gets wet again and again. The hand strength determines the thread size and the evenness of the strength.
