The April 25 Sports Club ( Chosŏn'gŭl : 4.25 체육 단; Hanja : 4.25 體育 團) is a North Korean football club from the capital Pyongyang , which is subordinate to the Korean People's Army . The club is the country's record champions with 15 championships. The name of the sports group is intended to commemorate the founding day of the People's Army in 1932.

The club was founded in July 1949 and was first called the Sports Group for Central Sports and Training School ( Chosŏn'gŭl : 중앙 체육 강습소 체육 단; Hanja : 中央 體育 講習 所 體育 團). On June 25, 1979 the name was changed to Sports Group April 25.

The club's rival is Pyongyang City Sports Club . The derby is also called the Pyongyang Derby and is very popular in North Korea.

In 2014, SC became runner-up on April 25th. In 2015, the club managed to win the championship. Half of the North Korean national team played SC for April 25.

The club won 15 championships (1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1990, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 2002, 2003, 2010, 2011, 2013 and 2015), making them the record champions of the North Korean DPR Korea League . The team also played in the AFC Champions League (1986: qualifying phase, 1987: qualifying phase, 1988: qualifying phase, 1989: group phase, 1991: fourth place, 1992: group phase).

In 2001, 2006 and 2011 the club won the Republican Championship , the North Korean cup competition.

Other sports

basketball

April 25th has a basketball team. In May 2013 it toured Mongolia to help the Mongolian national team prepare for their performances at the East Asian Basketball Association Championship .

volleyball

The club also has a volleyball department. There is a men's and a women's team. The latter took part in the 2015 VTV International Women's Volleyball Cup , an invitation tournament in Vietnam. The North Korean women defeated the Vietnamese women in the game for third place and won the bronze medal. North Korean player Jong Jin Sim was voted player of the tournament.
