Language comprehension , a synonym for language understanding , is the ability to grasp the sense and meaning of utterances. There is a close relationship with phonetics and phonology in linguistics as well as cognitive psychology and perceptual psychology .

Testing

Numerous tests examine speech understanding. For example, the Aachen aphasia test tests, among other things, auditory speech comprehension. "In aptitude tests for language comprehension, applicants must prove that they understand others and can accurately put their own thoughts into words".

Language comprehension with Louis Leon Thurstone

The American intelligence researcher Louis Leon Thurstone postulates in his so-called 2-factor theory of intelligence the existence of seven different s-factors (specific factors) of intelligence (in addition to the g-factor of intelligence ). One of these 7 factors is language comprehension.
