St. Martial School

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The St. Martial School was a school for composers from the beginning of the 9th to the early 13th century around St. Martial Abbey in Limoges . In addition to numerous organs , (unanimous) tropes and sequences come from this environment.

It is unclear to what extent the manuscripts found in the abbey reflect the development in St. Martial in particular, or whether they are collections of works from different places of origin in southern France. Composers of this school are not known by name.

Most of the abbey's manuscripts are now (2006) in the Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris.

The music of the St. Martial School is an important precursor to the music of the Notre Dame School .
