St. Ignatius Church (Wishaw)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The St. Ignatius Church is a Roman Catholic church building in the Scottish city of Wishaw . The neo-Gothic building is on Young Street in the city center. In 2001 St. Ignatius Church was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest category A, while the building was previously classified in category B. The church is still in use as such today.

history

The building was completed in 1865 and opened on May 21 of that year. As an architect, George Goldie was responsible for the planning. A bell tower was added in 1883. An expansion from 500 to 900 seats at the beginning of the 20th century remedied the lack of space that had arisen as a result of the community growth. A side aisle was added and the main nave, which previously ended at the height of the bell tower, was extended. In the course of the expansion, the interior also had to be adapted to the new building. A third confessional was installed in the 1920s.
