The States am Rheinpark is an event building in Cologne-Deutz , the future for Musical Theater Cologne is to be converted. The listed building from the 1920s with daylight-bright exhibition rooms and brick facade is directly adjacent to the halls of the Koelnmesse , the Tanzbrunnen area and the Rheinpark . The two-aisled structure consisting of a parallel hall and colonnade is optically divided in the middle by an open arch structure.

history

After the opening of the Cologne exhibition halls in May 1924, Adolf Abel was commissioned with redesign and expansion plans in autumn 1926 in order to create more space for the major Pressa event in 1928. A circular building was to be integrated harmoniously to the north of the exhibition center. Abel designed a flat, single-storey, elongated structure, the arched floor plan of which took up the shape of the garden or park roundabout in front. This building was named “State House” during the Pressa, when it served as a presentation building for the participating states. A year later, the 25th annual exhibition of the German Association of Artists with 150 participants and 322 exhibits took place in the State House.

In the 1950s, the event rooms , which had been badly damaged during the Second World War, were restored and, at the request of the exhibitors, the former state house was connected to the main exhibition building by means of a connecting hall via the outdoor area. As part of the fair, the divisible roundabout building was known as "Halls 6, 7 and 8" and, in the meantime, also as Rheinparkhallen. Since the beginning of 2010, the independent event location has been called “Staathaus am Rheinpark”.

Events and current usage

The State House can accommodate up to 12,000 people on a total of 16,900 square meters of floor space. In 2011, 46 events with 78,000 visitors took place. For the most part, these events are congresses, conferences, conventions, trade fairs, concerts, social or carnival events. For example, ART.FAIR , the “fvw Congress” (congress and trade fair for tourism, business travel and technology) and the “Christmas Angel Show” by Tommy Engel were guests at the State House .

Future use as a musical theater

The state house is to be converted into a musical theater with 1,800 seats. In addition, it is to have an exhibition area with 1200 square meters. For this purpose, it was planned to transfer the state house to the BB Group in leasehold in summer 2015 . Since the renovation of the Cologne Opera was not finished in time for the 2015/16 season, the city of Cologne postponed this project. Since the 2015/16 season, the State House has been used as the opera's interim venue. The heritable building right contract has not yet been concluded (as of 10/2016). Rather, the City of Cologne Council only discussed the possible framework conditions for such a deal in the summer of 2016.
