The Starnberg Argonauts are a German American football team. The Argonauts are a division of TSV 1880 Starnberg .

history

American football began in Starnberg in 1980. Six young men founded their own club. Strengthened by eleven Americans from the Flint barracks in Bad Tölz, who also took on the coaching, the first training began on April 4, 1981. In the following winter break, TSV 1880 could be convinced to include the footballers as a department in its ranks. After the announcement of the league operation, they played in 1982 for the first year in the second Bundesliga South. The Argonauts finished the season with a second place and thus rose to the first Bundesliga South. In the next year the league was successful and in autumn 1983 a first youth training took place. In 1984 the team threatened to break up due to personal reasons of the coach at the time and the associated difficulties. Shortly before the end of the season, the game had to be stopped due to increased bad luck with injuries. Instead, the youth managed to complete the first two games. The new season goal in 1985 was to rebuild. This succeeded, but the sporting success did not materialize. In contrast to the seniors, the youth had a successful season. Out of seven games, six were won and only one was lost unluckily. 1986 managed to get a US quarterback under contract. There were also half a dozen GIs from the Flint barracks available. In the end, the Argonauts had finished third. The youth also reached third place and played a play-off game in which they lost to the Munich Cowboys. In 1988 the Argonauts finished last. The relegation was only prevented because the Fürth 88ers were banned due to an infraction.

Thanks to the solid development work of the coach David Gwodzik, the Argonauts took second place behind the Landshut Dragons in the Bayernliga-Süd in 1992 and were henceforth back in the second Bundesliga. The Argonauts' offense scored the most touchdowns, scoring 247 points; 17 more than the first in the table. At the end of the season, due to the success, there was a large number of newcomers. 1992 was a successful year for young people too. In the Bayernliga-Süd, the team around head coach Ludwig Kastenmaier did not lose a single game and had a point ratio of 180: 12. In the Bavarian semifinals they clearly defeated the favorites Munich Cowboys. The youth became Bavarian runner-up and lost to the Stuttgart Scorpions in the quarter-finals of the German championship. In the following season, however, the Argonauts were directly relegated to the Bavarian League. The 1994 season ended in second place; this entitled to participate in the relegation games for entry into the newly founded regional league, which was achieved.

In 1996, the game had to be canceled, whereupon a forced relegation to the fifth division followed, only in 1998 succeeded in promotion to the fourth division. The team stayed there for the next few years. In the 2002 season, the team won no regular game, but was able to avoid relegation through two relegation games against the Nürnberg Packers.

Teams

In addition to the first team, there is a junior team that plays in the performance league, as well as youth flag football and a cheerleading group , the Silver Stars.
