Statistical information system

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A statistical information system provides data that have been obtained using statistical methods . The data is obtained through official statistics, business statistics, statistics from associations and statistics from scientific institutions. The data are subject to special statutory data protection regulations . In addition to the factual reference , the time reference ( reference date or period ) and the spatial reference are the essential properties of the statistical information: the presented facts apply to a specific point in time or period and to a specific location or a statistical spatial reference unit. The group of users of statistical information systems ranges from public administrations (governments, parliaments, municipal institutions) to business and their associations, scientific institutions and the general public.

The purpose of publishing the statistical data via a statistical information system is to provide high-quality information as decision support for politics, administration and the economy. In particular, future developments can be better controlled if reliable information is available about social, ecological and economic relationships. Mainly state authorities act as operators of statistical information systems.
