On the Stavropolskaya-Akzionernaja-Avia Flight 1023 (Flight number: SVL1023 ) took place on 18 March 1997 in Cherkessk a serious air accident. An Antonov An-24RW of the Stavropolskaya Akzionernaya Avia , with which an international charter flight from Stavropol to Trabzon was to be carried out, broke apart in flight due to severe corrosion of the fuselage structure and fell to the ground. All 50 people on board the machine were killed in the accident.

The aircraft was a 24-year-old Antonov An-24RW with factory number 37308502 and model serial number 085-02 , which made its maiden flight on March 28, 1973 and was delivered to Aeroflot on April 2 of the same year . The machine received the Soviet aircraft registration СССР-46516 . After the collapse of the Soviet Union , the Stavropolskaja Akzionernaja Awia took over the machine and registered it again on January 20, 1993 with the new registration number RA-46516 . From October 21, 1994, the aircraft was leased to the Musée Air Service in the Democratic Republic of the Congo , before being returned to the Stavropolskaya Akzionernaya Avia fleet in January 1997. The twin-engine, short-haul passenger aircraft was equipped with two Ivchenko AI-24WT turboprop engines. At the time of the accident, the machine had a cumulative total operating performance of 41,181 operating hours, which accounted for 27,628 take-offs and landings.

the accident

The start of the machine and the climb to cruising altitude went off without any particular incident. After 37 minutes of flight time, radio contact with air traffic control suddenly broke off at an altitude of 19,700 feet (approx. 6000 meters) and the machine disappeared from the radar screens. It was found that the machine had crashed a kilometer east of Cherkessk.

Accident investigation

During the investigation into the accident it was found that the wreckage was 3 kilometers apart. The rear of the machine was found in a field 1.5 kilometers from the remaining debris that had fallen into a forest. The investigators concluded that the tail must have broken off in flight, whereupon the machine crashed uncontrollably.

When examining the break points, strong corrosion was found between the 30th and 34th fuselage bulkhead, which could be identified as the cause of the breakup in flight. An overlook of the progressive corrosion in the course of the technical investigations was found to be a major factor in the accident. Up until a few weeks before the crash, the machine had been in use for a period of 16 months in areas with high humidity in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and maintenance intervals were regularly exceeded. No endoscope was used in the examinations , so that the advanced corrosion in the hard-to-reach cavities below the cabin floor could not be properly determined. Corrosion prevention measures were also not carried out properly. The decision to extend the maintenance intervals and the operating time was not justified under these circumstances.
