Steelanol

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Steelanol is an EU-recognized biofuel from the steel company ArcelorMittal , which is obtained from flue gases from steelworks.

Steelanol production

The flue gases from the steelworks are cooled and passed through converters with water at temperatures around 37 ° C. With the gas fermentation process, the microbes contained in it convert a large part of the carbon monoxide in the flue gases into bioethanol. The ethanol is distilled off from the water, liquefied and can be used for the production of plastics or as fuel for transport purposes.

ArcelorMittal estimates that the production of steelanol will create around 2000 jobs by 2025. This will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by around 5 million tonnes per year by 2025 and generate additional income of 300 million euros per year.
