Stone Tønnesson

Stein D. Tønnesson (born December 2, 1953 ) is a Norwegian historian. Since 2001 he has been the director of the International Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO).

Life

Tønnesson studied at the universities of Aarhus and Oslo . In 1991 he received his doctorate in history in Oslo and received a doctorate in philology. He did research on the topics of revolution, the Vietnam War, national unity in Southeast Asia, conflicts in the South China Sea and Norwegian sports history. Tønnesson also worked as a journalist. His interests over the past 10 years have been global history, globalization, and the decades of relative peace in Southeast Asia since 1979.

Tønnesson was Professor of Human Development Studies at the Center for Development and Environment at the University of Oslo and Research Fellow at the Nordic Institute for Asian Studies (NIAS) in Copenhagen . He has published numerous books on his research area.

Tønnesson is married to the Norwegian historian Bodil Stenseth.
