The Strahlenkolitis is the result of irradiation of tumors in the lower abdomen. Depending on the location, it is called radiation proctitis (limited to the rectum ) or -colitis (higher up than just in the rectum). The symptoms consist of diarrhea alternating with constipation .

Treatment is difficult and tedious. In about 2–5% of cases, however, an operation is required to get the symptoms under control.
