Sudanese Socialist Union

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Sudanese Socialist Union ( SSU ) is or was a political party in Sudan .

The SSU, which was modeled on the Arab Socialist Union of Egypt as part of efforts to establish a Federation of Arab Republics , was the only party allowed in Sudan from 1971 to 1985, when the regime of President Gaafar Nimeiry was overthrown in a military coup.

Today the Sudanese Democratic Socialist Union exists as the successor party of the SSU as a registered political party in Sudan. The party is led by Fatima Abdel Mahmood , who was the first female minister in Sudan during Gaafar Nimeiry's presidency and is a former member of the National Congress Party . Fatima Abdel Mahmoud is the first woman to run in the April 2010 general election during Umar al-Bashir's presidency in Sudan.
