The Suvorov Order ( Russian Орден Суворова / Orden Suworowa ) was the third highest military order in the USSR after the Order of Victory and the Order of the Red Banner . It was named after the Russian generalissimo Suvorov .

The three-class order was founded on July 29, 1942 by the government under Josef Stalin and was only awarded to marshals, generals and officers. The award of the Suvorov Order, First Class, was reserved for commanders of armies and fronts, their deputies, chiefs of staff, chiefs of operational management and departments, and chiefs of the armed forces. Corps, division and brigade commanders were awarded the Suvorov Order of Second Class. The Suvorov Order, third class, was awarded to regimental and battalion commanders and their deputies.

After the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, the order was retained unchanged, decided by the Supreme Soviet of the Russian Federation (resolution number 2557-I of March 20, 1992), but not awarded in the traditional form. The comprehensive presidential decree of September 7, 2010 led to a status change to a single class medal.
