Sweno (group)

Sweno (also written Zveno , Bulgarian Звено , German chain link ) was a political organization founded in Bulgaria in 1927 .

Sweno emerged from members of the so-called Military League, a junta that overthrew the Bulgarian Prime Minister Aleksandar Stambolijski in a 1923 coup . The members of Sweno advocated a corporate state and opposed political parties , especially the Inner Macedonian Revolutionary Organization .

On May 19, 1934, officers who were members of Sweno carried out a coup led by Damjan Weltschew and Kimon Georgiev . Georgiev became Prime Minister, his government dissolved all parties and trade unions and introduced a corporate state organization that resembled the corporate state system of fascist Italy . The Bulgarian King Boris III. overthrew the Georgiev government on January 22, 1935 and appointed Pecho Slatev prime minister.

In 1943 Sweno joined the Patriotic Front, which took power on September 9th. Georgiev became prime minister for a second time and signed an armistice with the Soviet Union . In November 1946 he was replaced by Georgi Dimitrov . Sweno initially continued to exist as a member of the Fatherland Front and dissolved in 1949.
