Swiss Music Radio

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Swiss Music Radio was a private radio station from Switzerland with the motto "The Sound Of Switzerland".

History and program

In June 2000, the main initiator George Wismer submitted the license application for the special interest broadcaster Swiss Music Radio (100% CH-Rock & Pop) to the Federal Office of Communications (OFCOM). The Federal Council approved the application shortly before Christmas 2000. Swiss Music Radio was 100% owned by Interradio AG.

Due to the surprisingly large response to the Swiss Music Radio project, an application was made in 2001 to change the license to an international license, which the Federal Council approved on December 19, 2001.

The first internal test broadcasts started on January 1, 2002, and on January 14, 2002 the satellite channel on the Hotbird satellite was switched on for test broadcasts. Swiss Music Radio then officially started on March 1, 2002.

Swiss Music Radio was the first radio program with 100% Swiss pop and rock music (Swiss performers). In addition to music, thematic presentations and announcements were also broadcast.

In accordance with the concept and concession of the Swiss Federal Council, Swiss Music Radio offered current local music production a Swiss-wide musical platform that was intended to spread modern Swiss music. Artists could submit their musical works directly to the broadcaster.

Swiss Music Radio could be received in Switzerland via cable (FM) and across Europe via satellite (DVB-S).

In accordance with the license extension of December 2001, Swiss pop and rock music should also be carried across Swiss borders by satellite transmission from Swiss Music Radio, which is why Swiss Music Radio broadcast digitally via satellite across Europe. The satellite broadcast addressed the approximately 400,000 Swiss abroad on the one hand and the many friends of Switzerland across Europe on the other.

On October 7, 2008, Swiss Music Radio ceased broadcasting. The frequencies were taken over by the newly founded station Rock Nation.
