Former synagogue in Burgdorf, today a cultural center
Main portal

The former synagogue is a building in Burgdorf , Hanover region , at Poststrasse 2.

It is a half-timbered house from 1811. The classicistic portal in the central axis is emphasized by an antique-style gable field. In front, on the street, was the Jewish school and behind it, under the same roof, the hall of the synagogue. This hall building originally had large, rounded, closed windows, which indicated the sacred function of the building to the outside.

The building was devastated in the November pogroms of 1938 , but not set on fire because of the narrow buildings in the old town. After the Jewish community was forced to sell their synagogue to the city of Burgdorf in 1939, the building served various purposes; it was hardly recognizable as a synagogue through modern shop windows.

A cultural center has been located here since 2008 , and a plaque next to the entrance draws attention to the history of the building:

“Synagogue (1811–1939) The Jewish community of Burgdorf built this house in 1811 as a synagogue. In 1939 she was forced to sell the building to the city of Burgdorf. From 1941 it was used as the office of the Hitler Youth and from 1944 to 1959 as a public library. In 1961 it became private property. In 2008 it became a place of encounter and culture. The city of Burgdorf commemorates its Jewish citizens who fell victim to National Socialist persecution. "
