The synagogue in Lisbon , the capital of Portugal , was built between 1902 and 1904. The synagogue is located at 59 Rua Alexandre Herculano.

history

The historicist synagogue was built according to plans by the architect Miguel Ventura Terra (1866–1919). The main facade of the building faces an inner courtyard, as it was forbidden at the time of construction to build non-Christian sacred buildings visibly on a street. The construction of a synagogue was the first in Portugal since the end of the 15th century (see Alhambra Edict ).

The synagogue was enlarged in 1948 under the direction of the architect Carlos Ramos .
