history

The Ashkenazim synagogue was built in 1850 on the site of an older one, but is not owned by the Jewish community today, but is used as a restaurant. In 1962 the Jewish community felt compelled to sell the synagogue to the city of Belgrade, which rededicated the synagogue into a cultural center. Since 1997 the synagogue has been rented to a hospitality company by the Belgrade municipality of Zemun. Since 2005 the Jewish community of Zemun has been collecting the necessary funds to buy back the synagogue.
