The Day of Democracy and National Unity (Turkish: Demokrasi ve Milli Birlik Günü ) has been celebrated as a national holiday in Turkey on July 15 since 2017 . The victims of the coup attempt in 2016 and the people who took to the streets that night or their joint actions are remembered.

On the night of July 15, 2016, there was a coup attempt by sections of the military, which numerous civilians opposed and made it fail. 249 people died and over 2000 were injured, which is thought of.

The then Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım announced in October 2016 that a legislative proposal had been drawn up, which was later adopted.
