Dance direction

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The term dance direction is used in dance language, choreology , to describe several phenomena: the directions of rotation , directions of movement and alignment of dancers.

Several terms are used to describe these different phenomena: clockwise / counterclockwise , with sun / opposite sun, clockwise / counterclockwise, to the right / left, up / down.

The dance direction is a relative indication of direction. It can refer to the entire dance floor, to a group of dancers or to the front of a chain of dancers.

Dance direction in counter dance

In the case of standard dances, dance direction denotes a general direction of movement of all dance couples in relation to the center of the dance floor, on a so-called circular path, and is uniformly counterclockwise.

At dances with the installation of the dancers in a circle, the dance towards the center of the circle relates upon contra dance to the music or the audience at chain dances on the front of the dancers.

Dance direction as an orientation system on the dance floor

An orientation system on the dance floor can be derived from a common dance direction. For this purpose, the directions of movement or the alignment of the dancers' bodies are related to the dance direction.

The following directions result:

  • in dance direction
  • obliquely outwards
  • outward
  • obliquely outwards against the dance direction
  • against dance direction
  • oblique to the middle against the direction of the dance
  • to the Middle
  • oblique to the middle

Explanation of terms

Clockwise / counterclockwise

also clockwise and counterclockwise called, see the direction of rotation clockwise and counter-clockwise . Rotating to the right can also be derived from turning around oneself, turning forwards around the right side of the body (shoulder) or starting backwards with the right leg backwards.

Sun with / opposite sun

mitsonnen corresponds to a direction of rotation clockwise or to the right. Opposite sun describes a direction of rotation counterclockwise or counterclockwise. Mitsonnen / gegenonnen were used to describe folk dances . Mitsunnen / opposite suns are derived from the apparent movement of the sun over the horizon.
