The Tarentaise cattle ( French : Tarentaise or Tarine ) is a breed of cattle from the Tarentaise in Savoy in France .

For thousands of years the animals were isolated from other races there. Selected by nature, these cattle are able to live at great heights and forage in very steep and rough terrain.

Today a cheese with a very special taste is produced from their milk in the mountain villages of the Tarentaise Valley, which comes from the high alpine vegetation.

All over the world, the Tarentese occupy a special niche in cattle breeding. In the USA, they are mainly used to breed crossbreeds that have to be adapted to rough pasture conditions at greater heights. They are also held for their beauty and good-natured temperament.
