Tarot de Marseille

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Tarot of Marseilles is one of the oldest and world's most popular Tarot - decks . In other parts of the world it is called - according to the national language - Tarot of Marseille (s) (English), Tarot de Marsella (Spanish) or Tarocchi Di Marsiglia (Italian). In German-speaking countries, the French term Tarot de Marseille remained .

A tarot is a set of playing cards that is primarily used today for self-knowledge, situation analysis and fortune telling . Originally and until the 18th century, however, it was only known to be used for playing cards. The Tarot de Marseille motifs were created in France in the 16th century. The Tarot de Marseille sets the trend for the basic design, the sequence of images, their numbering and names of subsequent games. The name giver for the Tarot de Marseille is the southern French port city of Marseille . This was the focus of card production. Tarot de Marseille refers to a group of closely related sets of cards, so it is more the generic term for the most important strand of the Tarot tradition than the name of a specific one. In addition to the Waite Tarot and the Crowley Thoth Tarot , the Tarot de Marseille, which probably came into circulation in southern France around 1500, is the most important tarot deck.
