The taurodontism even taurodontism (from Greek ταυρος tauros "bull" and Greek ὀδούς odous "tooth") is a very rare malformation of the molars . It usually occurs in the permanent teeth. Sometimes there is an autosomal dominant inheritance .
The first description comes from D. Gorjanovic-Kramberger from 1908.
The term was coined by Arthur Keith in 1913 .
Occurrence
There is an association with amelogenesis imperfecta , ectodermal dysplasia and tricho-dento-osseous syndrome , otodental syndrome and other rare syndromes.
It has also been seen in Klinefelter syndrome , XXYY syndrome, and Down syndrome .
Clinical manifestations
This is an abnormal shape of the tooth with enlarged tooth pulp , displacement of the bifurcation towards the tip of the root, missing waist on the tooth neck due to a malformation of the Hertwig epithelial sheath .

- mild form (hypotaurodontism)
- moderately pronounced form (mesotaurodontism)
- pronounced shape (hypertaurodontism)
was proposed by C. Shaw in 1928.
