The Teatro Comunale di Firenze is a former opera house in Florence , Italy .

The former amphitheater Politeama Fiorentino Vittorio Emanuele with 6,000 seats was opened on May 17, 1862 with a performance of the opera Lucia di Lammermoor by Gaetano Donizetti and formed the center of cultural creation in Florence.

After a fire it was reopened in April 1864.

In 1882 the theater was roofed over and renamed “Teatro Comunale” after it was taken over by the municipality in 1930. In 1958 the opera house was closed for 3 years and, after modernization, reopened in May 1961 with a performance of the opera Don Carlos by Giuseppe Verdi . The Teatro Comunale di Firenze had 2,000 seats. Because of u. a. The annual Maggio Musicale Fiorentino held there , it was also called "Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino".

With the new building of the Opera di Firenze in 2014, the Teatro Comunale di Firenze was closed.
