Teru teru bōzu ( Japanese. 照 る 照 る 坊 主 , also: て る て る 坊 主 , shining, shining monk ) is a Japanese custom or the title of fairy tale books that have this custom as their subject.

Custom

In this custom, small dolls made of white paper or cloth are made. They are hung on the eaves. In Japan the little dolls are said to have the magical ability to bring about nice weather for the coming day. When the prayer for nice weather has been answered, the doll is “rewarded” by pouring sake over it.

If the doll is hung upside down, it will rain the next day. In this case one speaks of: Fure fure bōzu ( ふ れ ふ れ 坊 主 ), Ame ame bōzu ( あ め あ め 坊 主 ) or similar regional variants.
