Text level

Text levels describe the various intermediate levels of a text in the course of its genesis.

The term is mainly used in edition science. A historical-critical edition of a work generally pursues the goal of reconstructing the genesis of the work on the basis of the text witnesses and of presenting the text levels identified by the editor in such a way that the genesis of the work can be understood.
