The C Programming Language is the first book on the C programming language . The first edition appeared in 1978. The second edition appeared in 1988 and was updated with regard to the then new ANSI-C standard. It comes from the authors Brian W. Kernighan and Dennis M. Ritchie , from whom Ritchie developed the programming language. The book was instrumental in spreading the C programming language and is still considered a highly respected reference work for C.

The book also made the Hello World program well known .

In Germany, the book is published under the title Programming in C with a completely different cover.
