The Merseybeats

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Merseybeats were a rock 'n' roll band from Liverpool who named themselves after the Liverpool River Mersey and became one of the most successful groups of the Mersey Beat .

Band history

In 1961 Tony Crane and Billy Kinsley founded the band The Mavericks , which in 1962 was first renamed The Mersey Beats - later written The Merseybeats . The group at that time consisted of Tony Crane (born April 17, 1945 in Liverpool; lead guitar / vocals), Aaron Williams (born June 23, 1942 in Liverpool; rhythm guitar / vocals), Billy Kinsley (born November 28, 1946 in Liverpool; bass guitar / vocals) and John Banks (born September 23, 1943 in Liverpool; drums). In 1963 they got a recording contract with the British Fontana label, which released their first single It's Love That Really Counts in August 1963 . They had their biggest hit under this band name with I Think of You (British pop charts No. 5, January 1964).

When Crane and Kinsley shrank to the duo The Merseys in 1966 , they were able to reach number 4 in the British charts with Sorrow .

After a few interruptions and reunions, the Merseybeats are still active at oldie events after the turn of the millennium.
