The Ordinary Boys
The Ordinary Boys are an English Britpop band from Worthing . At first they called themselves Next In Line . Her musical influences are mainly in Mod Revival , Britpop, Ska and 80s guitar pop. So its name originally comes from a Morrissey song.
Career
After the release of their debut album "Over The Counter Culture" (2004), the Ordinary Boys were regarded as the "upcoming band" in England. Reviews in the British music press celebrated the album - but sales figures fell short of expectations. Nevertheless, a loyal following, called Ordinary Army , formed, and the band's concerts were often sold out.
In 2005 the band's second album "Brassbound" was released. The criticism almost unanimously rejected the record. The band was criticized mainly because of their lack of originality, as they oriented too closely to their musical role models The Jam , The Specials and The Clash .
In January 2006 singer Samuel Preston took part in the TV show Celebrity Big Brother (UK) . During his stay in the Big Brother container for several weeks, he fell in love with the eventual winner of the show, Chantelle Houghton. The British tabloids and gossip press reported intensively on the new celebrity couple "Prestelle". In the summer of 2006, the two married amid great media hype.
Preston's sudden popularity led to a surge in CD sales for the Ordinary Boys. The single "Boys Will Be Boys" - which was actually released in 2005 - subsequently rose to number 3 in the British charts, as did the single "9 To 5", which was released shortly afterwards and which was created in cooperation with the rapper Lady Sovereign .
The Ordinary Boys' third album "How To Get Everything You Ever Wanted In Ten Easy Steps" (2006) was also a commercial success. The singles "Lonely At The Top" and "I Luv U" reached the UK top ten.
But the old fans from the Britpop, Independent and Punk scenes turned away more and more as a result. After the hype subsided, it became quiet around the band. In the meantime Preston and Chantelle have announced their separation, the band has not yet officially broken up, but has no further releases planned.
In Germany, the albums and singles of the Ordinary Boys are currently only available as UK imports or as downloads.
