history
The first broadcast took place on April 22, 2015 on the Australian TV station ABC. The first season was scheduled with 20 episodes.
On September 18, 2015, a second season of the show was commissioned. This was first broadcast on February 3, 2016. Another season was commissioned on November 2, 2016. This was first broadcast on February 1, 2017.
In addition to the renewal of the series in September 2015, a one-time special episode entitled The Yearly was also commissioned, which was broadcast on December 16, 2015. A second special episode aired on December 14, 2016.
format
The program opens with a so-called cold open , in which Pickering offers a brief preview of the guests and reports to come. The format of the show has been compared in the past to John Oliver's Last Week Tonight with John Oliver due to the similar structure. Pickering presents a selection of the relevant news topics from the past week against a humorous background. Most of the episodes contain a conversation with a correspondent (including Adam Briggs, Loyiso Gola, Jonathan Pie, Tiff Stevenson and Wyatt Cenac), as well as a short interview with a guest. A pre-prepared sketch, story, or interview is usually performed by Tom Gleeson and Kitty Flanagan. The broadcast will be recorded in front of a studio audience at ABC Melbourne Studios and will later be broadcast. Gleeson's interview segment Hard Chat is based on the format Between Two Ferns with Zach Galifianakis and was later performed as a quiz show entitled Hard Quiz .
