Theodorus (Antioch)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Theodorus († 371 in Antioch on the Orontes ) was a Roman usurper against Emperor Valens .

The Gaul Theodorus was secundicerius notariorum (Vice Chancellor) at the court of Valens in Antioch. There he is said to have tried in 371 to come to the throne with the help of magical practices (whether he actually proclaimed himself emperor is uncertain). In a sensational majesty trial, described in detail by Ammianus Marcellinus , Theodorus was tried and executed as a usurper. As a result, a real persecution of the heathen began in the Greek east of the empire, to which many pagan intellectuals fell victim in the following years.
