Thermoautochrome process

The thermal autochromic process (TA) is a digital printing process for printing photos in a quality that hardly differs from real photo prints.

True halftone reproduction is possible with the TA method . This means that, unlike with an inkjet printer, for example, the individual colors do not have to be printed next to one another using close patterns ( dither or raster) so that the appearance of many different colors is created. With the TA printer, the three basic colors are already contained in the paper and are activated by the action of heat (hence “thermal”). The color integrated in the paper is stored in three layers of different depth. Each color reacts to a different temperature range and can thus be activated separately. So it is possible to mix any color you want. After the colors in the paper have been activated in three passes (one for each color) according to the image to be printed, the remaining unused color is neutralized by UV light and the image is thus fixed.

With the TA printer, there are no other consumables apart from the special paper.
