Thomas Turnbull and Son

Thomas Turnbull and Son , also known as Whitehall Dockyard, was a shipyard in Whitby , North Yorkshire.

history

Thomas Turnbull founded the shipbuilding company in 1840. Turnbull initially leased the Larpool shipyard in Whitby and in 1843 a repair shipyard in Boghall. From 1844 shipbuilding was interrupted again before the company took over Whitehall Dockyard in 1850. The shipyard built wooden sailing ships for the first three decades, before building iron tramp ships in Whitehall in 1871. In 1899 the Boghall shipyard was sold again. After there were increasing difficulties in the shipyard's size due to the necessary passage of the narrow Whitby Bridge in the last years of operation, the shipyard ended shipbuilding in 1902 after increasing losses on previous construction contracts. The repair business continued for another year, after which the shipyard finally closed.

In the 62 years up to 1902, the shipyard built a total of 113 tramp ships, more than half of which were built for the tramp shipping company of the Turnbull family.
