Pet urn

Animal urn made of biomaterial

The animal urn is a container for the permanent burial or storage of the ashes of deceased animals after a cremation .

If the animal owner decides to keep the ashes in an animal urn after the death of the pet, the cremation in the animal crematorium takes place as an individual cremation. Mixing up the ashes is prevented by means of the accompanying number and identification stone that is added to each individual cremation. The ashes are then given to the animal owner in a sealed ash bag.

size

Most pet urns are designed to hold the closed ash bag as well as to be filled directly with the ashes. Depending on the size of the deceased animal, there are different amounts of ash, which is why most urn manufacturers offer animal urn models in different sizes. Animal urns with a capacity of 0.5 liters are usually intended for small pets up to 8 kg normal live weight such as guinea pigs, rabbits and cats. Pet urns with a capacity of 1 liter are preferred for large cats and small to medium-sized dogs up to a weight of 18 kg. For larger pets up to 40 kg, many pet urn manufacturers offer models with a 2 liter capacity. There are also numerous intermediate and special sizes, such as B. for horses.

The size of an animal urn is measured by the so-called normal live weight of the animal and not by the last weight, if it is z. B. was sick.

General practice values
Weight volume
up to 1 kg ≤ 0.15 liters
up to 8 kg ≤ 0.50 liters
up to 18 kg ≤ 1.00 liters
up to 25 kg ≤ 1.50 liters
up to 40 kg ≤ 2.00 liters
up to 60 kg ≤ 3.00 liters
over 60 kg > 3.00 liters

There may be slight deviations depending on the crematorium or urn producer. It depends on how fine the ashes are after cremation.

materials

The choice of the material for the pet urn often results from the further use:

Ceramic, glass and metal pet urns

Since there is no compulsory burial for the ashes of animals, many pet owners decide to set up the urn at home as a reminder of the deceased pet. Traditionally stable and durable materials such as metal, ceramics or glass are used. They are usually manufactured by casting or in a forming process such as metal spinning.

Organic pet urns

In line with the ecologically sustainable trend in the funeral industry, urns are increasingly being offered in biodegradable materials such as wood or bio-materials (e.g. "liquid wood" Arboform).

These can be set up permanently at home or buried on earth at any time. The degradation process of the material only starts after prolonged contact with microorganisms in the soil and the ash is completely decomposed and released into the soil. The animal crematories offer suitable biodegradable ash bags for organic animal urns. In addition to classic woodworking, modern processes such as 3D printing for organic materials are increasingly being used.

developments

Legal regulations and increasing urbanization, which make it difficult to bury animals in Germany, have made cremation the most popular type of burial for pets in Germany in recent years .

The changed status of the pet as a personal companion of humans also leads to a higher demand for individual coping with grief and the possibility of commemoration. Pet urn manufacturers are trying to meet this trend by customizing z. B. by means of name engraving or a combination with a photo of the animal and a large variety of models.
