Titular diocese of Aliezira
Aliezira , Catalan : Algesires , Castilian : Algeciras , is a titular bishopric of the Roman Catholic Church .
The Spanish name Algeciras can be traced back to the Arabic place name al- Dschasira al-Chadra for green island . Here in Andalusia , the Moors first gained a firm foothold when they invaded Spain in 711 and kept the city until it was conquered by Alfonso XI. of Castile March 27, 1344.
The television channel Al-Jazeera or Al Jazeera has the same etymology .
