Togakushi shrine
The Togakushi Shrine ( Japanese 戸隠神社. Togakushi-jinja ) is a Shinto shrine in today Nagano belonging village Togakushi in Japan . It is located in the wooded Togakushi Mountains , which have long been considered sacred.
It consists of three individual sanctuaries, in which the three Kami Ame-no-tajikara, Omoikane and Ame-no-uhaharu are venerated:
- Hōkōsha ( 宝光 社 , lower shrine)
- Chūsha ( 中 社 , middle shrine)
- Okusha ( 奥 社 , upper shrine)
The shrine is connected to the Kami Ama no Iwato .
The way to Okusha leads through an avenue of approximately 900 year old Japanese cedars through a torii .
On the way to the shrine there are a number of restaurants that offer soba noodles made from Togakushi , which is famous in Japan . The shrine is also known for its kagura , ceremonial dances that are said to look back on 1,300 years of tradition.
The shrine is a popular tourist attraction and can be reached in an hour from Nagano by bus.
