The Tolbooth in Aberdeen , Scotland , is a 17th century prison that now serves as a museum . Strictly speaking, this is the (investigative) prison (wardhouse), which was attached to the customs house. The Tolbooth was built between 1616 and 1629 and is attached directly to the courthouse. The present museum is located on Union Street in downtown. The building complex with the neighboring Town House has been registered in Category A of the Scottish Monument Lists since 1967 .

The museum contains exhibits from criminal history as well as the original Aberdeen Mercat Cross . After the Battle of Culloden , 50 Jacobites were imprisoned in prison.

Among ghost hunters , the Aberdeen Tolbooth is one of the buildings most affected by paranormal activity in Aberdeen .
