Tomboy is note taking software for desktop operating systems. The program is often referred to as a "local wiki " because it brings many of the functionality of such a system with it, but does not require a web server . For example, the individual messages can be easily linked using links or automatically refer to existing notes. Tomboy is Free Software written in C # using GTK # . The software is part of the Gnome desktop environment and was published under the LGPL . Tomboy is often used to manage personal information.

Since the Mono project version 2.0 has been available, Tomboy can also run under Mac OS X. On November 19, 2018, it was removed from the Debian development branch because it depends on outdated GNOME libraries and is no longer maintained. Debian is u. a. the basis for Ubuntu , the most popular Linux distribution .

Project spin-offs

Since the Mono project in Linux distributions entails numerous program library dependencies, which is particularly important with the limited storage space for CD images, and there were also concerns about the reproduction of patented Microsoft technology on the part of the Free Software community, was Gnote developed. The program is a C ++ port from Tomboy, which simulates the entire functionality without having to rely on mono libraries. In Fedora 12, the program is included in the standard installation.

In addition, Tomboy-ng , a rewrite in the Pascal programming language , has existed since 2017 .
