Tonnelon

Tonnelon

The Tonnelon was a siege machine that was used from the 12th century . The name means something like "little barrel" or "barrel" and came from the fact that empty wine barrels were often used for the moving gondolas.

The barrel was used to bring archers above the level of the ramparts of besieged castles or cities, so that they could then fire on the battlements and the inner courtyards of the fortifications from above. In principle, the way it works can best be compared with that of today's lifting platforms.

The gondolas were raised using a counterweight or a winch.
