Danjurō as Takenuki Gorō

Torii Kiyomasu ( Japanese 鳥 居 清 倍 , first name Shōjirō ( 庄二郎 ); life dates unknown) was a Japanese painter in the Ukiyoe style, active between 1697 and 1722.

life and work

Kiyomasu, the second head of the Torii School, was either a brother, son, or student of the school's founder, Torii Kiyonobu . He created a number of prints with kabuki actors in their specific roles, but also prints of beautiful women. He worked with Kiyonobu and thus consolidated the Torii style. One of his best prints is the "Takenuki" ( 竹 抜 ) Soga Gorō ( 曽 我 五郎 ), who played the role of bamboo by the Kabuki actor Ichikawa Danjurō . As was customary at the time, the print shows only vermilion red alongside black . It is located in the Tokyo National Museum .
