Torsion waves are sound waves that propagate in rod-shaped solids, with a twist ( torsion ) occurring perpendicular to the direction of propagation. They are a special case of the transverse wave .

A catastrophic effect of resonance on this type of wave was shown in the destruction of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge .
